Email Security

Most people are aware that you can get a virus by receiving an infected email. Let me tell you how it works. Say, you get an email from a friend that says you just have to check out their email, it is way too funny. So you see that it is from a friend that uses precautions against virus infections so you open it up. Shortly thereafter, your whole computer crashes. Then you find out that you just got the latest email virus.

What actually happened is when you opened your friends email (or rather the attachment that came with the email) it had a virus. The virus replicated itself and sent it out to everyone in your email address book. and since it is from you, how many of your friends do you suppose will open it and get infected.? Then after all of the emailing, the virus attacks your computer. So now your computer is down and you suddenly have a bunch of friends that hate you for sending them the virus. Even thou you didn't personally send it. It came from your computer without your knowledge.

So what can you do to prevent this. Very simple. Most Viruses are transmitted via attachments. Attachments have to be opened for the virus to get out. Some are done thru html but that is another story. So what you do is to put a code word in the subject line of any emails that you send with attachments. Advise your friends to not open any emails from you without your code word in the subject line. When you put it in the subject line it can be seen without opening it up. So they can delete it right away if it does not have a code word. A virus would not know to put your code word in the subject line. This will increase you chances to not get a virus via emails.
