Nintendo Game Boy Turns 25—Throwback Thursday

It’s hard to believe that the Nintendo Game Boy is now a quarter century old. While smartphones feel like a natural addition to the hands of many today, when the Game Boy hit the market back in ‘89, handheld consoles were considered futuristic.

The original specs, by today’s standards, were limited—4.19 MHz processor, 8 KB of RAM, and a 2.5” greenish LCD display that was only capable of displaying a few shades of gray. However, these little machines had the ability to run games up to 60 frames/second and had a battery life (almost 30 hours) that today’s smartphones should envy. The first generation Game Boy was on shelves for 14 years and sold over 120 million units before retiring! Feeling nostalgic about those Game Boy days? Don’t miss this walk down memory lane from Mashable: Every Game Boy model from the past 25 years

There are some very passionate Game Boy fans here at Punchkick, so we’ve compiled a list of favorite Game Boy games. The top 3 listed were clear winners, but strong cases have been made for the others:

    1. Pokemon (Red & Blue)
    2. Tetris
    3. The Legend of Zelda
    4. Super Mario Land
    5. Excite Bike

Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy Legend, Gargoyle’s Quest, Dr. Mario, Contra, and DuckTales
