5 expectations for Monday’s Apple Watch event

1. Specifics of Apple Watch battery life

Apple has revealed very little about the Apple Watch’s battery life, but experts speculate the wearable will need to be charged every night, much like a smartphone. This would put Apple Watch at par or better than many Android Wear devices, but pales in comparison to the e-ink–based Pebble Time.

2. Apple Watch customization options

Apple announced three distinct lines of Apple Watch material and band options—Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and Apple Watch Edition. Each line features a handful of bands, with options ranging from the rubber Sport Band to the high-end leather or Milanese Loop options. But little is yet known about the combinations available out of the box, or which combinations would need to be purchased separately.

3. iOS companion app details

The beta version of iOS 8.2 is available to developers, with a barebones Apple Watch companion app included, but the specific nature of this app’s integration and capabilities remain inaccessible to the public. An additional Fitness app was demoed as a companion to Apple Watch’s many health and fitness capabilities, but the exact design and feature set of these companion apps is sure to be revealed next week.

4. Apple watch release date

Tim Cook has mentioned April, but the exact retail and e-commerce availability of Apple Watch is sure to be revealed next week. As with iPhone and iPad releases in years past, Apple is likely to allow for online pre-ordering of Apple Watch a week before its debut, with Apple Store availability to follow on an appropriate Friday in April—likely to lengthy queues of Apple fans.

5. Final Apple Watch pricing

Apple has announced that Apple Watch will start at $349, but the industry assumption is that this price point applies to the aluminum-and-rubber Apple Watch Sport models. Speculation for the stainless steel Apple Watch model has ranged everywhere from $500 to $1500, but the most discussion has surrounded the Apple Watch Edition 18-karat gold models. Watch industry experts and technology pundits have guessed that the Edition could range anywhere from $5000 to as much as $20,000, based on pricing for watches of similar gold content from Rolex and other luxury watch manufacturers.

Regardless of the price point or available SKUs, the Apple Watch event on Monday is sure to capture the technology community’s imaginations. We’ll be covering all the news and reveals next week as the Apple Watch draws closer to launch.
